Android phone not showing up on a Mac: what to check, in order
If your Android phone is not showing up on your Mac after you plug it in, the first thing to know is that nothing is supposed to appear. macOS does not put an Android phone in Finder or on the desktop. You need a file transfer app on the Mac, and the phone only shows up inside that app. If you already have one and the phone is still missing, the documented causes come down to five things: the Mac has not allowed the accessory, the phone is set to charge only, the cable cannot carry data, the phone is locked, or another Mac app has claimed it.
Is it normal for nothing to appear in Finder?
Yes. An Android phone shares its storage using a protocol called MTP, not as a disk. The Android Compatibility Definition says devices "MAY use USB mass storage, but SHOULD use Media Transfer Protocol". USB mass storage is what a memory stick uses, and it is why a memory stick pops up in Finder and a phone does not.
MacDroid, which sells a Mac app for exactly this, puts it bluntly: "Apple's operating system lacks native MTP support, meaning you can't connect your Android device to your Mac without third-party apps." Google's own USB help page gives steps for a Windows computer and a Chromebook and none for a Mac.
So here is what "showing up" looks like, depending on what you have installed:
| App on the Mac | Where the phone appears |
|---|---|
| None | Nowhere. The phone just charges |
| OpenMTP (free) | In the right-hand pane of OpenMTP's window |
| MacDroid | In MacDroid's device list, then as a disk in Finder once you click Mount |
| Android File Transfer (old) | In its own window, if it still runs. Google no longer offers or documents it |
If you have no app yet, that is your answer. Install OpenMTP and follow how to use OpenMTP. Why the Mac behaves this way when Windows does not is covered in why a Mac does not recognise an Android phone.
Two quick questions that narrow it down
Does the phone charge when plugged in? If not, start with the cable and port rows in the table below.
Does the phone show a USB notification? Swipe down from the top of the phone's screen. Google's page calls the notification "Charging this device via USB". If it is there, the cable is at least connected and the phone has noticed. If you never see any USB notification while the phone charges, suspect a charge-only cable.
Symptom, cause, fix
Work down this table. Every cause comes from Apple's, Google's, OpenMTP's, or MacDroid's own documentation.
| What you see | Cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Phone charges, nothing on the Mac, no app installed | macOS has no built-in way to open an Android phone | Install OpenMTP or MacDroid |
| A prompt on the Mac asked to allow an accessory and you clicked Don't Allow, or missed it | On Mac laptops with Apple silicon, Apple says a new USB accessory must be approved, and if you decline, "your Mac won't recognize the accessory" though it can still charge | Unplug, plug in again, and click Allow. Unlock the Mac first |
| Phone charges, app shows nothing | USB mode is charging. MacDroid's guide says a phone "usually sets to 'charge only' mode by default" | Unlock the phone, tap the USB notification, choose File transfer |
| No USB notification on the phone at all | The cable only charges. Google: "Not all USB cables can transfer files." | Try another cable, ideally the one that came with the phone |
| Nothing until you wake the phone | The phone is locked. Google's and OpenMTP's steps both start with unlocking | Unlock, then click refresh in the app |
| Worked yesterday, blank today | Another app holds the phone. OpenMTP: "Only one app can use an MTP device at a time." | Quit Preview, Image Capture, Photos, Google Drive, Dropbox, OneDrive, Android File Transfer, Garmin Express, iMovie, Lightroom |
| Samsung Galaxy never appears | Samsung Smart Switch, or an unanswered prompt | Quit Smart Switch. On the phone, tap Allow when asked "Allow access to phone data?", or choose Transferring files in the USB notification. Both are from OpenMTP's connection guide |
| Still nothing | Something is stuck | Restart the Mac. OpenMTP's troubleshooting list marks this step "IMPORTANT" and says it has resolved the issue for many users. Restart the phone too |
| Still nothing | A faulty port | Google's test: connect the phone to a different computer, and a different device to the Mac |
The Mac-side prompt most guides skip
If you have a MacBook with Apple silicon, check this before anything else. Apple's page Allow USB and other accessories to connect to your Mac says that when you use a new or unknown USB accessory, "you get an alert that asks you to allow the accessory to connect". Three details matter:
- "If your Mac is locked, you need to unlock it before you can allow an accessory to connect."
- If you click Don't Allow, the Mac will not recognise the accessory, but "accessories can still charge". That produces the exact symptom this page is about: the phone charges and nothing else happens.
- The next time you connect it, you are asked again.
The setting lives in System Settings, Privacy & Security, Accessories, under "Allow accessories to connect". Apple lists four choices, and the default is Ask for new accessories. Apple describes this for Mac laptops with Apple silicon. Its page does not describe the alert for desktop Macs or Intel Macs.
Which Mac apps get in the way?
OpenMTP's guide lists them: Preview, Image Capture, Photos, Google Drive, Dropbox, OneDrive, Android File Transfer, Garmin Express, iMovie, and Lightroom. Its FAQ adds: "If Android File Transfer opens every time you connect your phone, uninstall it." MacDroid's FAQ describes the same conflict and says you can "stop running the conflicting software or disable working with MTP devices in its preferences".
Closing a window is not enough. OpenMTP's troubleshooting list says to quit conflicting apps completely and then relaunch.
Would going wireless avoid all this?
Mostly, yes. Every row in that table is a USB problem: the accessory prompt, the USB mode, the cable, the one-app-at-a-time rule.
The Relay does not use USB at all. Its file transfer and browsing shows the phone's storage in a window on the Mac and you drag files either way over your local network, after pairing once by scanning a QR code. It costs $19.99, paid once. Free wireless tools exist too: NearDrop and LocalSend send files without a cable, and are compared in NearDrop or LocalSend.
Wireless has its own failure mode, which is the network: both devices have to be on the same one. And if a cable is what you want, say for a full camera roll with no Wi-Fi around, The Relay is no help, because it has no USB mode. Fix the cable route with the table above.
Questions people ask
Why does my Android phone charge but not connect to my Mac?
Charging needs only power. File access needs a data cable, the phone's USB mode set to File transfer, an app on the Mac, and, on an Apple silicon MacBook, your approval of the accessory. Check those four.
Does a Mac need a driver for an Android phone?
Not a driver in the Windows sense. It needs an app that speaks MTP, such as OpenMTP or MacDroid. Google no longer offers one for macOS, and we found no Apple page describing one.
My Mac shows the phone in Image Capture but not in Finder. Is that right?
Finder will not show the phone either way. Image Capture is on OpenMTP's list of apps that can hold the phone, so quit it before opening a file manager. What Image Capture does with an Android phone is covered in transfer photos from Android to a Mac.
