How to use an Android phone as a webcam in Microsoft Teams on a Mac
Teams on a Mac can use an Android phone as its webcam if the phone shows up on the Mac as a camera. Get the phone connected first, with Android's USB webcam mode or a webcam app. Then in Teams select Settings and more, then Settings, then Devices, and choose the phone from the Camera dropdown menu. Use Make a test call on the same screen before a real meeting. Not every phone webcam tool names Teams as supported, so that test matters more here than in other apps.
Publisher note: The Relay publishes this guide and is one of the products discussed. Details about other products come from each maker's own pages, checked on 1 October 2026. Prices and features change, so confirm before you buy.
Which phone webcam options say they work with Teams?
This is the question to settle before you spend time on setup. The general routes are in how to use an Android phone as a webcam for a Mac. Here is what each maker says about Teams specifically.
| Option | What its maker says about Teams |
|---|---|
| Android's USB webcam mode | Google's page says the phone can be used "just like a regular webcam" on devices with USB Video Class support. It names no apps. |
| Camo | Names Microsoft Teams among the apps it works with. Mac program for macOS 12.3 or later, Android 7.0 or later. |
| DroidCam | Names "MS Teams" among chat programs, but its desktop clients are for Windows and Linux. On a Mac it works through OBS Studio. |
| Iriun Webcam | Says you can use the phone "with your favourite video applications". It names no apps on its home page. |
| The Relay | Names Zoom, Google Meet, and FaceTime. Teams is not on the list. |
We will be plain about our own product. With The Relay, the phone's camera and microphone appear on the Mac as a camera and a microphone, the kind of devices an app's camera and microphone menus list. The apps we name as able to select them are Zoom, Google Meet, and FaceTime. We do not claim Teams. If your working day is on Teams and you want to try The Relay, look for the phone in the Teams Camera dropdown and run a test call straight after you buy. There is a refund window; see the terms.
If Teams is the only reason you want a phone webcam, Camo is the option whose maker names Teams and a Mac program together. Start there, or with the free USB mode.
How do I choose the phone as the camera in Teams?
These steps are from Microsoft's support page Manage your device settings in Microsoft Teams. The page is not written for one operating system, so a menu may sit slightly differently on your Mac.
- Connect the phone by your chosen route and confirm it works in another Mac app, such as Photo Booth.
- Open Teams on the desktop and select Settings and more.
- Select Settings, then Devices.
- Find the video settings. Microsoft's instruction: "Choose your preferred Camera device from the dropdown menu." Pick the phone.
- Look at the preview. Microsoft lists "See a preview of your video" among the video settings.
If the phone is missing from the dropdown, quit Teams completely and open it again with the phone already connected.
How do I choose the microphone in Teams?
On the same Devices screen, Microsoft says you can adjust audio settings "by choosing your primary audio device, Speaker, and Microphone from their dropdown menus".
Whether the phone can be your microphone depends on the route. Google's steps for the USB webcam mode describe the camera only. DroidCam's site says audio capture is supported, on the platforms it has clients for. The Relay presents the phone's microphone to the Mac as a microphone. If nothing from the phone shows in the Microphone dropdown, use the MacBook's microphone or a headset. A phone camera with a headset microphone is a perfectly good setup.
How do I test before a real meeting?
Microsoft's Devices screen includes this: "Make a test call to test your call quality." Use it. A test call tells you whether Teams accepts the phone's camera and microphone without involving colleagues.
A five-minute check:
- Select the phone as Camera, and your chosen Microphone.
- Select Make a test call and follow the prompts.
- Then start a meeting with only yourself in it, turn the camera on, and leave it for ten minutes. Watch for the picture freezing or the phone getting hot.
- Have someone ring the phone during the test. With the USB mode, Google says the webcam stream pauses when another app needs the camera.
How do I change the camera during a Teams meeting?
Microsoft's page Use meeting controls in Microsoft Teams says to select the dropdown arrow next to Camera "to preview your video, change your background, and more", and the dropdown arrow next to Mic "to adjust your sound settings". That page does not spell out device switching step by step, so if you do not see a device list there, go back to Settings, then Devices.
What gets in the way on a work Mac?
Teams is usually a work tool, and work computers bring their own obstacles.
| Obstacle | What to do |
|---|---|
| You cannot install apps on the Mac | The USB webcam mode needs no Mac software. Check whether your phone offers it. |
| USB mode selected, Mac shows no camera | Android's documentation says USB 3.0 or later cables do not work for this on macOS. Use a USB 2.0 data cable. |
| Wireless app cannot find the phone | DroidCam's help page notes that firewalls "are usually present on corporate or school networks" and can block connections. Any wireless route needs the phone and the Mac on the same network. |
| Company rules about personal phones | Ask your IT team before connecting a personal phone to a work computer. |
The Relay is wireless only and needs the phone and the Mac on the same local network, so an office network that keeps devices apart will stop it. It also needs to be installed on the Mac, which a managed work computer may not allow. In either case a cable route is the better choice. It costs $19.99, paid once, and needs Android 8.0 or later and macOS 13 Ventura or later.
Questions people ask
Does Microsoft Teams support using a phone as a webcam?
Microsoft's device settings page describes choosing a camera device from a dropdown menu. It does not describe a phone webcam feature. The phone has to appear on the Mac as a camera through another tool.
Which Android webcam app is safest to pick for Teams on a Mac?
Going by what the makers publish, Camo is the one that names both Microsoft Teams and a Mac program. The free USB webcam mode is worth trying first if your phone has it. We have not tested either.
Does The Relay work with Teams?
We do not claim it. The Relay makes the phone's camera and microphone appear on the Mac as a camera and a microphone, and names Zoom, Google Meet, and FaceTime as apps that can select them. Test Teams yourself within the refund window.
