Google Messages for web not working on a Mac: Google's own fixes
If Android messages are not syncing on your Mac, remember how Google Messages for web works: the browser page is a window onto the phone, and every text goes through the phone. So most failures are the phone losing its connection, the phone's battery settings putting Google Messages to sleep, or the pairing having expired. Google's fix list is short. Turn the phone's Wi-Fi off and on, make sure both devices are online, allow background data for Google Messages, switch off any VPN, turn off battery optimization, and if none of that works, unpair and pair again.
The causes and fixes here are from Google's two help pages: Check your messages on your computer and Fix problems sending, receiving, or connecting to Google Messages. Setup itself is covered in Android messages on a Mac.
Symptom, cause, fix
| What you see | Cause Google gives | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| A notice that the computer cannot connect | The phone's connection | "On your phone, turn your Wi-Fi off and back on." Check both devices are online "with a strong signal". If problems continue, restart the phone |
| The same notice, after the first fix | Background data is off for Google Messages | Settings, Network & internet, Data usage, Mobile data usage, Google Messages, turn on Background data |
| The same notice | Battery optimization on the phone | "If battery optimization is turned on, turn it off. Settings can vary by device" |
| The same notice, with a VPN running | The VPN | "Turn VPN off and try to reconnect" |
| The same notice, in Chrome | An extension | "Turn off your Chrome extensions one by one. Some extensions could block Google Messages for web" |
| Sign-in works but pairing does not finish | The phone app and the Mac are on different Google Accounts, or the phone is still set to QR pairing | In Google Messages on the phone, open the account menu, then Device pairing. If your profile picture is missing, tap Switch to Google Account pairing. Sign in on the Mac with the same account |
| No QR code to scan | QR pairing "is no longer available in the US" | Pair with your Google Account instead |
| It was working weeks ago, now asks you to pair | Automatic unpairing. Google unpairs you "if you don't use your Google Messages account for a few weeks" | Pair again |
| It stopped on the Mac after you opened it elsewhere | "Only one computer can be active at a time" | Use it on one computer, or switch back on the Mac |
| Stopped after a phone reset or a new phone | The old pairing is stale | Unpair Google Messages for web, then pair the new phone |
| The page is paired but your texts are not there | The web page "shows what's on your Google Messages mobile app", and nothing else | Make Google Messages the phone's default texting app |
What should I try first?
Google's connection list, in its order, with the Mac filled in.
- On the phone, turn Wi-Fi off and back on.
- Check both devices are online. Open any web page on the Mac. On the phone, open one too. If the phone is struggling, restart it.
- Turn on background data for Google Messages. Google's path is Settings, Network & internet, Data usage, Mobile data usage, then scroll to Google Messages. On a Samsung Galaxy or other non-Pixel phone the names differ. Search Settings for "data usage" or open the app's info page.
- Turn off the VPN, on whichever device has one, and reconnect.
- In Chrome, turn off extensions one at a time. Google says some extensions can block Messages for web. Safari is also on its supported list, so opening messages.google.com/web there is a quick way to see whether the problem follows the browser.
- Turn off battery optimization for Google Messages. Google says the setting varies by device and does not give a path.
- Unpair and pair again. On the phone: Google Messages, account menu, Device Pairing, then Unpair next to the Mac, or Unpair all computers. Then follow the pairing steps from the start.
Why are my texts not showing up on the Mac at all?
Two causes, both on the phone.
Google Messages is not the phone's texting app. The web version mirrors the Google Messages app. If your phone sends and receives texts in a different app, which is worth checking on a Samsung Galaxy, the web page has nothing to show. Google's troubleshooting page lists "Verify that Google Messages is set as your default texting app" among its first checks. Google's page on Samsung devices says Google Messages is preloaded on select Samsung phones and is the default on some of them.
The phone is not receiving them either. If a text has not reached the phone, it cannot reach the Mac. Google's checklist for that covers the plain things: a properly seated SIM, signal, Airplane mode off, enough plan balance, and the latest version of the app. If you moved from an iPhone, it adds one more: "make sure you've deactivated iMessage for your number". Google's switching page explains why: otherwise your messages "could continue going to your old iPhone instead of your new phone".
Why can I read messages on the Mac but not send them?
Google says Messages for web "sends SMS messages using a connection from your computer to your phone". Sending fails for the same reasons it would fail on the phone itself, plus a broken link between the two. Send a test text from the phone. If that fails, the problem is the phone's signal or plan, not the Mac. If it works from the phone and not from the Mac, go back to the connection list above.
What does Google not cover?
Google's pages do not mention any fault specific to macOS or to Safari, and they do not list error codes. If the page will not connect in one browser after all of the above, try another of the four supported ones before blaming the phone. Unpairing and pairing again is the documented way to start clean.
Is there something that needs less babysitting?
For reading and replying, no. Google Messages for web is the free tool that sends texts from a Mac, and nothing here replaces it.
For the narrower job of seeing a text arrive, The Relay works differently. It is an app on both devices that stays connected over your own Wi-Fi, so there is no browser tab to keep paired. With its texts and one-time codes feature, an SMS that arrives on the phone shows up on the Mac, and a login code in it is copied to the Mac's clipboard. It does not send texts. It costs $19.99 once, and both devices must be on the same network or in Bluetooth range. If you hold conversations, keep fixing the web version.
Questions people ask
Why does Google Messages for web keep disconnecting?
Google's page points to the phone: a weak connection, background data turned off for Google Messages, battery optimization, or a VPN. Work through those four first. They are the causes Google names.
Why is there no QR code on messages.google.com/web?
Google says QR code pairing is no longer available in the US. You pair by signing in to the same Google Account on the phone and the Mac and tapping the matching emoji on the phone.
Does my phone have to be on for Messages for web to work?
Yes. Google says messages are sent using a connection from your computer to your phone, and lists a Wi-Fi or data connection on the phone as a requirement.
Why did Google Messages for web unpair by itself?
Google says you are unpaired automatically, for security reasons, if you do not use it for a few weeks. Pair again from Device Pairing in the phone app.
