Can you use iMessage on a Mac without an iPhone?
Yes. A Mac with an Apple Account can use iMessage on its own, with no iPhone, and exchange blue-bubble messages with anyone on an Apple device. What you lose is the phone-number side. Apple's Messages guide for Mac says that with an Apple Account you can send iMessages "to anyone using iMessage on their Apple device", and that "if you have an iPhone, you can also send SMS, MMS, or RCS text messages to any mobile phone from your Mac." No iPhone means no green-bubble texts from the Mac, and that includes an Android phone's number.
Publisher note: The Relay publishes this guide and is one of the products discussed. Details about other products come from each maker's own pages, checked on 26 October 2026. Prices and features change, so confirm before you buy.
How do I set up iMessage on a Mac with no iPhone?
You need an Apple Account. If you do not have one, Apple's page on creating an Apple Account says you can make one on the Mac itself. Then:
- Open the Messages app on the Mac.
- Sign in with your Apple Account email address and password.
- Choose Messages > Settings, click iMessage, and look at the list under "You can be reached for messages at". On a Mac with no iPhone, expect your email address there.
Menu names can shift slightly between macOS versions. If yours differ, look for the iMessage tab in Messages settings.
Can I use my phone number on the Mac if my phone is Android?
No, not through anything Apple documents. Apple's page on adding a phone number to Messages says "you can use the phone number of your iPhone with Messages and FaceTime on your Mac or iPad," that setup starts on the iPhone, and that you need "an active SIM or eSIM associated with that number." Your Android number is on a SIM in an Android phone, so that route is closed.
So people message your email address instead. That means a friend who texts your number reaches your Android phone, as a green bubble, and a friend who messages your Apple Account email reaches your Mac, as a blue one. You end up with two threads. The longer version is in iMessage with an Android phone and a Mac.
Does the Mac get my Android texts?
No. Apple's Text Message Forwarding page calls it a "feature of your iPhone", and every device must be signed in to the same Apple Account. An Android phone cannot forward texts into Apple's Messages app.
For your Android number, use Google Messages for web, which Google's pairing page says works in Chrome, Firefox, Safari, and Edge. It pairs through your Google Account, and the phone needs a Wi-Fi or data connection.
What else needs an iPhone for texts on a Mac?
Apple's pages tie a few text-related features to an iPhone:
| Feature | Needs an iPhone? | Source |
|---|---|---|
| iMessage to Apple users, from your email address | No | Messages guide |
| SMS, MMS, and RCS from the Mac | Yes | Messages guide |
| Your phone number in Messages on the Mac | Yes | Phone number page |
| Text Message Forwarding | Yes | Forwarding page |
| Safari filling in security codes from texts | Yes, via forwarding | Safari guide |
That last row is why a Mac with an Android phone cannot do the same code trick. See our guide on autofilling texted codes on a Mac with Android.
What should I use instead?
Free first.
- Reply from the Mac: Google Messages for web.
- Chat with iPhone friends: RCS in Google Messages. Google's RCS FAQ lists typing indicators, read receipts, and high-resolution media between Android and iPhones, subject to country and carrier.
- See texts and codes arrive on the Mac: The Relay. It is one subscription through Google Play that covers your phone and your Mac, with a 7-day free trial. Its texts and one-time codes feature shows an incoming SMS on the Mac and copies a login code in it to the clipboard. It does not send texts and does not provide iMessage, so it is not the answer if you want blue bubbles.
Questions people ask
Do I need an iPhone for iMessage on a Mac?
No, an Apple Account is enough for iMessage between Apple devices. You need an iPhone for SMS, MMS, and RCS on the Mac, according to Apple.
Can friends text my phone number and reach my Mac?
Only if the number is an iPhone's. For an Android number, texts go to the phone. Friends need your Apple Account email to reach the Mac.
Can an Android phone join a Mac's iMessage?
We found nothing on Apple's pages that allows it. Third-party bridges exist and are covered in Does Android have iMessage?, with their risks.
