Install an APK from a Mac to an Android phone

·6 min read

There are two ways to install an APK from a Mac to an Android phone. If you have Android's developer tools, connect the phone by USB and run adb install followed by the path to the file. If you do not, copy the APK to the phone like any other file, tap it there, and allow the install when Android asks. Both work on a MacBook with any Android phone. The first is quicker when you do this often, and the second needs nothing installed beyond a way to move a file.

How do I install an APK with adb?

This is the method in Android's own adb documentation, which describes adb as "a versatile command-line tool that lets you communicate with a device".

  1. Get adb on the Mac. It is part of the Android SDK Platform Tools package. The steps for a Mac are in installing adb on a Mac.
  2. Turn on USB debugging on the phone. Android's documentation says you "must enable USB debugging in the device system settings, under Developer options", and that Developer options is hidden by default on Android 4.2 and higher. How to reveal it varies by phone maker; see Android USB debugging on a Mac.
  3. Connect the phone with a USB data cable and unlock it.
  4. Accept the prompt on the phone. The documentation says the system "shows a dialog asking whether to accept an RSA key that allows debugging through this computer".
  5. Check the connection. In Terminal, run adb devices. The documentation says a connected phone is listed as a "device".
  6. Install the APK. Run adb install path_to_apk, replacing path_to_apk with the location of the file on your Mac.

Three details from the same page:

  • More than one device connected? adb stops with "more than one device/emulator". Pick one with -s and the serial number shown by adb devices, for example adb -s emulator-5555 install helloWorld.apk.
  • Several APK files for one app? Use install-multiple. The documentation says this is useful when you have downloaded all the APKs for a specific device from the Play Console.
  • A test build? The documentation says you must use the -t option when you install a test APK.

If adb devices does not list the phone as a device, go back to steps 2 and 4. The documentation says adb commands cannot be executed unless you unlock the device and acknowledge that dialog.

How do I install an APK without adb?

Two stages: get the file onto the phone, then open it there.

How do I get the APK onto the phone?

Any Mac-to-phone file route works. The APK is an ordinary file as far as these tools are concerned.

RouteHowNote
USB with OpenMTPDrag the APK from the left pane into the phone's Download folderFree. See how to use OpenMTP
NearDropRight-click the APK in Finder, Share, NearDrop, then scan the QR code with the phoneFree, same Wi-Fi. Google says received files go to Downloads, in a Quick Share folder
LocalSendSelect the file on the Mac, click the phoneFree, app needed on both
The RelayDrag the APK into the phone's storage in the Mac windowPaid, same local network
MacDroidCopy in FinderIts FAQ says copying files to the device needs the PRO version

The Relay's file transfer and browsing is the one of these that lets you choose the destination folder on the phone from the Mac, without a cable and without touching the phone until it is time to tap the file. It costs $19.99 once. It is not a developer tool: it copies the file but does not install it, and it has no USB mode. For a single APK, the free routes do the job.

How do I open the APK on the phone?

  1. On the phone, open a file manager app and find the APK. If you used the Download folder, look there.
  2. Tap the file.
  3. Android will stop you the first time. Google's help page for Pixel phones describes it: "On the message that opens, tap Settings", then "Turn on Allow from this source".
  4. Go back and tap Install.

The permission is given to the app you opened the file from, not to the APK. So if you tap the file in a file manager, it is the file manager that gets permission to install apps. Google's wider Android help page says some of these steps work only on Android 8.0 and up. Samsung, Xiaomi, and other makers word the screens differently; look for "Install unknown apps" or "Unknown sources".

How do I switch the permission off again?

Google's steps: open the phone's Settings, tap Apps, then Special app access, then Install unknown apps. Tap the app you allowed and turn off Allow from this source. It takes ten seconds and it is worth doing, because it closes the door you just opened.

Is it safe to install an APK from outside Google Play?

Google's position is on the same help page: "We recommend that you get apps from Google Play, but you can also get them from other sources." It follows with a warning that if you download apps from unknown sources, "your device and personal information can be at risk", that the device "could get damaged or lose data", and that personal information "could be harmed or hacked".

What still protects you is Google Play Protect. Google says it "checks your device for potentially harmful apps from other sources", is on by default, and that Google recommends you "always keep Google Play Protect on". The page also says:

  • You "may get a recommendation to scan an app from outside of Google Play that has never been scanned by Google Play Protect before". Scanning sends app details to Google for evaluation.
  • Play Protect may block the install of an unverified app that uses sensitive permissions, such as reading your text messages or notifications, when it comes from "higher risk sources, such as a web browser or messaging app".

Practical rules that follow from that: only install an APK you got from the app's own developer, leave Play Protect on, accept the scan if it is offered, and treat a Play Protect block as a reason to stop, not a hurdle to get around. No tool on this page makes an untrustworthy APK safe.

Questions people ask

Can I install an APK on Android from a Mac without Android Studio?

Yes. adb comes in the standalone Platform Tools package, so Android Studio is not required. Or skip adb entirely: copy the file to the phone and tap it.

Why does my phone say it cannot open the file or block the install?

Usually the app you tapped the file in has not been given permission. Follow the prompt to Settings and turn on Allow from this source. If Play Protect blocked it, read the reason it gives before going further.

Does adb install work over Wi-Fi?

Android's documentation says Android 11 and higher support deploying wirelessly with adb, with the Mac and phone on the same network. See adb over Wi-Fi from a Mac.
