Motorola to Mac file transfer: how to connect a Moto phone to a MacBook
For Motorola to Mac file transfer, Motorola's own help page tells Mac users to install a third-party app, and it names OpenMTP. You connect the phone with a data cable, choose File transfer in the USB notification, and drag files in the app. Wireless options are NearDrop and LocalSend. Google says certain Motorola phones support AirDrop through Quick Share but names no model, so check Google's list for yours.
Publisher note: The Relay publishes this guide and is one of the products discussed. Details about other products come from each maker's own pages, checked on 26 October 2026. Prices and features change, so confirm before you buy.
What does Motorola say to do on a Mac?
Motorola's help page, Transfer files between phone and computer (the version shown there is for the moto g57), is the clearest maker-written answer in this group. As of 26 October 2026 it says:
- Connect the phone and computer with a USB data cable. The page warns that many accessory cables are "charge-only" and will not let the computer see the phone.
- Unlock the phone.
- Swipe down from the top, tap the Charging this device via USB notification, and choose a mode: File transfer for most files, which Motorola marks as recommended, or PTP for photos and videos.
- On a Mac, "download and install a third-party app, such as OpenMTP", then use it to move files.
The same page lists other options. Google Drive works on all devices. Smart Connect is described as Windows only. Quick Share is described as working between Windows and Android. None of those is a Mac route, which is why the Mac steps are a separate item.
How do I use OpenMTP with a Motorola phone?
OpenMTP describes itself as an advanced Android file transfer application for macOS. Its page lists macOS 10.14 Mojave or higher, drag and drop, and transfers of files larger than 4 GB.
- Install OpenMTP and open it.
- Do Motorola's steps above on the phone, ending on File transfer.
- The phone appears on one side of OpenMTP's window and the Mac on the other. Drag files across.
- Quit other apps that may hold the phone. OpenMTP's connection guide names Preview, Image Capture, and Google Drive.
- If no notification shows, the same guide says to search Settings for USB or USB Preferences and choose File transfer.
More detail is in how to use OpenMTP. If the phone is missing, go to why a Mac does not recognise an Android phone.
Does Motorola support AirDrop to a Mac?
Google says some Motorola phones do. Its Quick Share help page lists Motorola among the makers with certain devices that support AirDrop in both directions, and gives no models. Google's compatible-device list names no Motorola model as compatible as of 26 October 2026. It shows the Motorola razr fold 2026 under "Coming soon".
So no Motorola phone is confirmed by name today. The honest answer is: look at the list for your exact model, and if it is not there, use the cable or the Wi-Fi apps. Phones without AirDrop can use Quick Share's QR code to send to a Mac, which Google says keeps files on its servers for 24 hours and needs internet on both devices.
What are the Wi-Fi options?
NearDrop is an unofficial Mac app for part of Quick Share, on the same Wi-Fi network. When a phone sends, it shows a PIN and the Mac shows a notification. For Mac to phone, NearDrop shows a QR code, and its page says Samsung phones support only the QR code while other Android phones can use the Quick Share button in Google Files.
LocalSend needs an app on both devices. It lists Android 7.0 or later and macOS 11 or later, and its page says no internet connection or third-party servers are needed. A router with AP isolation can block it.
Can I read Motorola texts and use the clipboard on a Mac?
Texts, yes, with Google Messages for web, if Google Messages is the phone's texting app. Google's page describes pairing through your Google Account, and says SMS goes through the phone, so carrier fees apply. See Android messages on a Mac.
For the clipboard and notifications, neither Motorola's page nor Google's describes a Mac option. Motorola's Smart Connect is described as Windows only.
Where does The Relay fit for a Motorola owner?
If you moved to a Moto phone and kept a Mac, the missing part is the everyday glue. The Relay gives you a clipboard that works both ways, the phone's notifications on the Mac, incoming calls to accept or decline, login codes from texts copied to the Mac's clipboard, link handoff, and a Mac window that browses the phone's files. It needs Android 8.0 or later and macOS 13 Ventura or later. The Relay is one subscription through Google Play that covers your phone and your Mac, with a 7-day free trial.
It has no USB mode, so Motorola's own cable steps with OpenMTP stay the right choice for a wired copy. It does not send texts from the Mac or mirror the screen. We have not tested it on specific Moto models, so use the trial to check yours.
