Pixel to Mac file transfer: how to connect a Google Pixel to a Mac

·7 min read

For Pixel to Mac file transfer, a Pixel 8a or later can send files to the Mac's AirDrop through Quick Share, and a Pixel 9 or later, except the Pixel 9a, can receive from the Mac too. Pixels older than the 8a, and anyone moving a lot of data, should use a USB cable with a free Mac app called OpenMTP. Photos come across through Google Photos, and Google documents a USB webcam mode that is worth testing on a Mac.

How do I send files between a Pixel and a Mac without a cable?

Google's Quick Share help page says a Pixel 8a or later can send to an iPhone, iPad, or macOS device.

Pixel to Mac:

  1. On the Mac, open Control Center in the menu bar, click AirDrop, and choose Everyone. Google calls this setting "Everyone for 10 minutes", which is its name on an iPhone.
  2. On the Pixel, open the file or photo, tap Share, then Quick Share.
  3. Pick the Mac from the nearby devices.
  4. Click Accept on the Mac.

Mac to Pixel: Google's page says receiving from an iPhone, iPad, or macOS device needs a Pixel 9 or later, excluding the Pixel 9a.

  1. On the Pixel, set Quick Share visibility to Everyone for 10 minutes, or open the Quick Share page and stay in Receive mode.
  2. On the Mac, open the file, click the Share button, then AirDrop, and select the Pixel. This is the standard method in Apple's AirDrop guide.
  3. Accept on the Pixel. Google says received files go to the Files app, under Downloads, in a Quick Share folder.

The model-by-model list and the troubleshooting table are in AirDrop from Android to a Mac.

On a Pixel 8, a Pixel 7, or older, there is no AirDrop support. Install NearDrop on the Mac, which makes the Mac a Quick Share target on the same Wi-Fi network, or LocalSend on both devices. Both are free. Google also describes a QR code option inside Quick Share for phones without AirDrop support. It uploads the files to Google's servers for 24 hours, so it suits sending to someone else's iPhone more than to your own Mac.

How do I transfer files from a Pixel to a Mac with a USB cable?

Google's Pixel help page, Transfer files between your computer and Pixel phone, gives steps for a Windows computer and a Chromebook. It does not mention a Mac, and Google no longer offers or documents its old Android File Transfer app. The phone side of the steps is the same, and a free Mac app does the rest.

OpenMTP describes itself as an Android file transfer application for macOS. It needs macOS 10.14 Mojave or later and supports drag and drop and files larger than 4 GB.

  1. Install OpenMTP on the Mac.
  2. Unlock the Pixel and connect it with a USB cable that carries data.
  3. On the Pixel, tap the Charging this device via USB notification.
  4. Under Use USB for, select File Transfer.
  5. In OpenMTP, drag files between the Mac side and the phone side.
  6. Unplug the cable when the copy has finished.

Google's own troubleshooting advice applies here too: try a different cable, try a different port, and restart the phone. More fixes are in Android File Transfer not working on Mac.

How do I get Pixel photos onto a Mac?

Google Photos is the low-effort route. Google's backup page says that with backup on, photos and videos are saved to your Google Account and can be reached from any device you are signed in to. On the Mac, go to photos.google.com, select the pictures, click More, then Download, as Google's download page describes.

Storage is shared across Google Photos, Google Drive, and Gmail. If you care about full resolution, check the backup quality setting before trusting the cloud copy. That, and the cable route for a whole camera roll, is covered in transfer photos from Android to a Mac.

Can I use a Pixel as a webcam on a Mac?

Google documents a wired webcam mode. Its Pixel Camera help page, Use your Pixel phone as a webcam, gives these steps:

  1. Connect the phone to the other device with a USB cable that supports data.
  2. On the phone, tap the Charging this device through USB notification.
  3. Under Use USB for, select Webcam.
  4. To adjust and preview the picture, tap the Webcam notification at the top of the screen.

Does it work with a Mac? Google's page does not name macOS or any other operating system. It says the webcam works on any device that has USB Video Class (UVC) support, "such as laptops, TVs, cars, and other phones and tablets". So test it: follow the steps, open a video app on the Mac, and look for the phone in the app's camera menu. Google also notes that the webcam stream pauses if you take a video call on the phone or open an app that needs the camera.

If you want the phone as a camera without a cable, or you also want its microphone, that is one of the things The Relay does. The options are compared in use an Android phone as a webcam for a Mac.

What is still missing, and when is The Relay worth it?

A Pixel with a Mac now has files, photos, and texts in a browser for free, and possibly a wired webcam. What it does not have is the rest of what an iPhone does with a Mac: a shared clipboard, the phone's notifications on the Mac's screen, a login code that arrives by text and is ready to paste, an incoming call you can answer from the keyboard.

The Relay adds those. It syncs the clipboard both ways, shows incoming texts and copies the login code to the Mac's clipboard, shows the phone's notifications as Mac notifications, shows incoming calls with accept and decline, hands links across, and makes the phone's camera and microphone available to Mac apps. For files it gives you a window on the Mac that browses the Pixel's storage. It costs $19.99, paid once, and needs Android 8.0 or later and macOS 13 Ventura or later.

It is the wrong tool for some jobs. It has no USB mode, so use OpenMTP for a wired copy. It does not send texts from the Mac, so use Google Messages for web for replies. It does not mirror the phone's screen or share its internet connection. And if all you need is to send a file now and then from a recent Pixel, Quick Share already does that for nothing.

Questions people ask

Does a Pixel work with a MacBook?

Yes, for the basics. Recent Pixels share files with a MacBook over AirDrop through Quick Share, photos sync through Google Photos, and texts work in a browser. A cable transfer needs a Mac app such as OpenMTP, because Google's USB steps cover Windows and Chromebook only.

Which Pixel phones can AirDrop to a Mac?

Google's help page says a Pixel 8a or later can send to a macOS device, and a Pixel 9 or later, excluding the Pixel 9a, can receive from one. The Mac's AirDrop must be set to Everyone.

Why does my Mac not see my Pixel over USB?

A Mac cannot browse an Android phone's storage without an app. Install OpenMTP, then on the Pixel tap the USB notification and choose File Transfer. If there is no USB notification at all, the cable may be a charge-only cable.

Is there a Google app for connecting a Pixel to a Mac?

Not one that Google's help pages point to. Google's Quick Share app for computers is for Windows, and its Pixel USB instructions are for Windows and Chromebook. On a Mac you rely on AirDrop support in Quick Share, Google's web apps, and third-party apps.
