Smart Switch for Mac: what it does, and what we could confirm

·6 min read

Smart Switch for Mac is Samsung's computer software for Galaxy phones. Samsung describes the computer version as a way to back up a phone to a personal computer, restore that content to a Galaxy, and run firmware updates. It is a backup and restore tool, not a file browser, so it will not show you the phone's folders the way a file manager does. The download is on Samsung's own site, at the address Samsung gives in its Google Play listing: samsung.com/smartswitch.

One thing to be straight about. Samsung's support website refuses automated reading, so we could not open its current Smart Switch pages. Everything below comes from Samsung pages that did open, and where those run out, we say so and do not guess.

What does Samsung say Smart Switch does?

Three Samsung sources opened normally on 1 October 2026.

Samsung's Google Play listing for Smart Switch Mobile, the phone app, says Smart Switch "gives you the freedom to move your contacts, music, photos, calendar, text messages, device settings and more to your new Galaxy device". It names the computer version once, as "Smart Switch PC/Mac software", in the part about moving from an iPhone by way of an iTunes backup. The listing was last updated on 3 September 2026.

A Samsung Mobile Press article from 26 June 2017 lists three ways to use Smart Switch: phone to phone over Wi-Fi, phone to phone over a USB cable, or "Smart Switch's seamless computer software". Of the last one it says: "The software option allows backup using a personal computer. The intuitive interface makes restoring content on a new Galaxy phone swift and easy, and provides a simple means for you to conduct firmware updates and back up your new device." That article is old, so treat it as a description of what the software is for, not of the current version.

Samsung's Knox documentation for IT administrators says that "the two default apps that back up and restore device data on Samsung devices are Samsung Cloud and Samsung Smart Switch", and that people open them from Settings under Account and backup.

Put together: Smart Switch exists to carry a phone's contents to another Galaxy, and the computer software adds a backup you keep on your own machine.

What can Smart Switch transfer?

The Play listing gives this list for the phone app:

CategoryWhat the listing names
Personal dataContacts, calendar (device content only), messages, call logs, memos, alarms
MediaPhotos, music and videos (DRM-free content only), documents
SettingsWi-Fi, wallpapers
Galaxy devices onlyApp data, home layouts

Whether the Mac software backs up exactly the same list is something Samsung's current page would tell you. We could not read it.

What could we not confirm?

These are the questions people ask most, and the honest answer to each is to check Samsung's page or the app itself.

QuestionWhat we can say
Which macOS versions does it support? Not confirmed. Check the download page before installing
Does it run on Apple silicon Macs? Not confirmed
Where does it keep backups on the Mac?Not confirmed. We will not guess a folder path. Samsung's instructions for your version are the place to look
Does it work with non-Samsung phones? The 2017 article describes restoring content "on a new Galaxy phone". Samsung's pages present it as a tool for moving to a Galaxy

How do I use it?

Samsung's pages say what the software is for, not which buttons to press. This outline adds the general USB steps for a Galaxy phone, taken from OpenMTP's connection guide; Samsung's own instructions are the authority.

  1. Download the Mac software from Samsung's Smart Switch page and install it.
  2. Connect the Galaxy to the Mac with a USB data cable and unlock the phone.
  3. If the phone asks "Allow access to phone data?", tap Allow.
  4. Use the software's backup option to save the phone's contents to the Mac, and its restore option to put them back on that phone or a new Galaxy.

The exact button names and screens belong to Samsung's current version, so follow the on-screen prompts and Samsung's own instructions. If the phone is not detected, see Smart Switch on Mac not working.

Why does Smart Switch stop other Mac apps seeing my phone?

This is the one side effect that is well documented, by someone else. OpenMTP, the free Mac file manager for Android, says in its FAQ: "If the app goes blank when you connect a Samsung phone, uninstall Samsung Smart Switch, which blocks other apps from reaching the phone over MTP." Its connection guide puts the milder step first: "quit Samsung Smart Switch and try again."

The background is in the same guide: "Only one app can use an MTP device at a time." MTP is the protocol an Android phone uses to share files over USB. So if you install Smart Switch for an occasional backup and also use OpenMTP or MacDroid for everyday files, expect to quit Smart Switch fully before the other app can connect. That is OpenMTP's account of the conflict; we have not seen Samsung's.

What are the alternatives on a Mac?

Publisher note: The Relay publishes this guide and is one of the products discussed. Details about other products come from each maker's own pages, checked on 1 October 2026. Prices and features change, so confirm before you buy.

Smart Switch does one job: a whole-phone backup you restore to a Galaxy. Most people searching for it on a Mac want something smaller.

Google's backup page says its backup covers apps and app data, call history, contacts, device settings, and SMS and MMS messages, and that it is uploaded to Google. For a copy on the Mac itself, the steps are in backing up an Android phone to a Mac.

The Relay is not a Smart Switch replacement and does not back up a phone. Its file transfer and browsing puts the Galaxy's storage in a Mac window so you can drag files either way over your local network, alongside clipboard sync, texts and login codes, notifications, and calls on the Mac. If what you wanted from Smart Switch was day-to-day access to the phone's files, that is the overlap. If you wanted a backup to restore after a reset, use Google's backup or Samsung's tools. More options are in Smart Switch alternatives for Mac.

Questions people ask

Is there a Smart Switch for Mac?

Samsung's own Play listing refers to "Smart Switch PC/Mac software" and points to samsung.com/smartswitch. Check that page for the current Mac download and the macOS versions it supports.

Where are Smart Switch backups stored on a Mac?

We could not confirm the location from a Samsung page, so we are not going to name one. Check Samsung's instructions for the version you have.

Can I use Smart Switch to move files between a Galaxy and a Mac day to day?

It is built for backup and restore, according to Samsung's descriptions. For everyday file transfer, a file manager such as OpenMTP or a wireless tool is the more direct route. See connecting a Samsung Galaxy to a Mac.
