Back up WhatsApp from Android to a Mac: what is possible and what is not
There is no button that backs up WhatsApp from an Android phone to a Mac. WhatsApp's own backup on Android goes to your Google Account, and neither WhatsApp nor Google describes a way to download that backup to a computer. What you can put on a Mac is the part most people care about: the photos, videos, voice notes, and documents WhatsApp has saved on the phone. Those are ordinary files, and you copy them like any other folder. For the chats themselves, the realistic choices are the Google backup for safekeeping and the WhatsApp Mac app for reading them at a desk.
WhatsApp's Help Center pages did not return their text when we opened them, so this page uses the WhatsApp pages that did open, plus Google's and Android's own documentation. Where a step would need WhatsApp's instructions, we say so and do not guess.
What are the options?
| Method | What ends up on the Mac | What it is good for |
|---|---|---|
| WhatsApp's built-in backup | Nothing. It is stored in your Google Account | Restoring your chats on a new or reset phone |
| Copying WhatsApp's media folder | The photos, videos, audio, and documents, as normal files | A real archive of the media, on your own disk |
| WhatsApp for Mac or WhatsApp Web | A live view of your chats | Reading and searching at the Mac. Not a backup |
| Exporting a single chat | A copy of one conversation, if your version of WhatsApp offers it | Keeping one important thread |
Where does WhatsApp's own backup go?
To Google. WhatsApp's blog post End-to-End Encrypted Backups on WhatsApp talks about "backups stored on Google Drive or iCloud", and Google's page How your Google storage works lists "WhatsApp backups on Android" among the things that use your Google Account storage.
Two things follow.
It counts against your storage. Google's page is where to check how much room you have.
It is not a file for your Mac. Google lists the backup as a category of storage. We found no Google or WhatsApp page that describes downloading it, opening it on a computer, or reading it outside WhatsApp. If you turn on WhatsApp's optional encryption, the blog post is explicit that it is sealed: you protect it with "either a password of your choice or a 64-digit encryption key that only you know", and "neither WhatsApp nor your backup service provider will be able to read your backups".
So keep the Google backup switched on, because it is what brings your chats back on a new phone. Just do not think of it as the copy on your Mac. If you use the encrypted option, store the password or key somewhere safe. By WhatsApp's own description, nobody can recover it for you.
How do I copy WhatsApp photos and videos to the Mac?
This is the part that works, and it needs nothing from WhatsApp.
Android's storage documentation describes two kinds of storage: files private to an app, and shared storage for "media, documents, and other files" that other apps can reach. Media that WhatsApp has saved to the phone's shared storage shows up in any file browser, on the phone or from the Mac.
Find the folder. Open the phone's storage in whichever tool you use and search for a folder named WhatsApp. We could not confirm the exact location on a WhatsApp page, so we are not printing a path. Android's developer reference describes application-specific media directories on shared storage, and WhatsApp's package name, visible in its Google Play address, is com.whatsapp. If a search for "WhatsApp" finds nothing at the top level of the phone's storage, search for that package name as well.
Copy it. Pick whichever route you already have working:
| Route | How | Guide |
|---|---|---|
| USB cable | A free tool such as OpenMTP shows the phone's folders. Drag the WhatsApp folder to the Mac | Android to Mac over USB |
| Wi-Fi, free | Send the folder's contents with LocalSend | LocalSend from Mac to Android |
| Wi-Fi, browsing from the Mac | The Relay shows the phone's storage in a Mac window | Below |
| Through the cloud | Google Photos can back up chosen device folders | Below |
The Google Photos route. Google's backup help page says that with Backup on, "your chosen device folders are automatically backed up too, not only your camera". In the Google Photos app, go to your profile picture, Photos settings, Backup, Back up device folders, and switch on the folders you want. If WhatsApp's image and video folders are in that list, their contents will reach photos.google.com, where you can download them on the Mac. This covers pictures and video only, not documents or voice notes, and it uses Google Account storage.
Copy before you uninstall. Android's reference for app media directories says files there "will be deleted when the application is uninstalled". If you are about to remove WhatsApp, wipe the phone, or trade it in, copy the media folder to the Mac first.
Can I keep the chat text on the Mac?
Not as a backup you can restore from, as far as any page we could open says. There are two partial answers.
WhatsApp for Mac. Link the Mac as described in link WhatsApp from Android to a Mac and your conversations are readable and searchable there. It is a window onto the account, not an archive. WhatsApp's blog says that "if your primary device is inactive for a long period, we automatically log you out of all companion devices". If the phone is lost and stays off, expect the Mac copy to go with it.
Exporting one chat. If WhatsApp on your phone offers an export option in a chat's menu, it gives you a copy of that one conversation. We could not open WhatsApp's page on it, so we cannot give you the steps or tell you what the export contains today. Search WhatsApp's Help Center for "export chat".
Should I use a WhatsApp transfer tool?
We leave them out. You will find paid programs that advertise WhatsApp backup or transfer to a computer, and we could not check their claims against a WhatsApp page. Before paying for one, ask what it actually copies. If the answer is the media folder, you can do that yourself for free.
Where does The Relay fit?
In one place: getting the media folder across without a cable. The Relay's file transfer and browsing puts a window on the Mac that browses the phone's storage, and you drag the WhatsApp folder, or just this week's photos from it, onto the Mac over your local network. The app sets no file-size limit. It costs $19.99 once and both devices must be on the same network.
It does not read, export, or back up WhatsApp chats, and it does not sync a photo library on a schedule. If a one-off copy of the media is all you want, a USB cable and OpenMTP cost nothing.
Questions people ask
Can I back up WhatsApp from Android directly to my Mac?
Not with WhatsApp's own backup. On Android that goes to your Google Account. What you can copy directly to a Mac is WhatsApp's media folder from the phone's storage, over USB or Wi-Fi.
Does WhatsApp for Mac keep a backup of my chats?
No. It is a linked device that shows your chats. WhatsApp says linked devices are logged out automatically if the phone is inactive for a long period, so it cannot stand in for a backup.
Will I lose WhatsApp photos if I uninstall the app?
You can. Android's documentation says files in an app's own media directory are deleted when the app is uninstalled. Copy the folder to your Mac, or make sure the pictures are backed up, before removing WhatsApp.
