See missed calls and voicemail from an Android phone on a Mac

·6 min read

A Mac cannot show an Android phone's call log or play its voicemail by itself. What does reach the Mac is the alert. A missed call and a new voicemail each post a notification on the phone, and a notification mirroring app shows the phone's notifications on macOS. The recording is a different matter. It stays with your carrier or in the phone's Phone app, unless your number is a Google Voice number, which has a voicemail inbox you can open in a browser.

What happens on the phone when I miss a call?

Two separate things, and it helps to keep them apart.

The missed call. Google's Phone app keeps a history of "calls you've made, answered, or missed", according to its call history page, with an icon that marks the missed ones. That list lives in the Phone app on the phone. Neither Google nor Apple documents a way to open it on a Mac.

The voicemail. Google's page on checking voicemail says "When you get a voicemail, you can check your message from the notification on your phone." So a new voicemail announces itself as a notification, and the message itself is played by calling your voicemail service or, on some carriers, from a list in the Phone app.

These steps describe Google's Phone app, the one on a Pixel. If your Samsung Galaxy or other phone uses its maker's own phone app, the menu names will differ, so check the maker's support page. The principle is the same: an alert appears in the notification shade, and the detail stays in the phone's app.

How do I get the alert onto the Mac?

By mirroring the phone's notifications. The full comparison is in Android notifications on a Mac. For calls in particular, these are the makers' own descriptions.

With The Relay, the first line of defence is that you see the call while it is still ringing. The calls feature shows an incoming call on the Mac, where you can accept or decline it, which is the best cure for missed calls. If you were away from the desk, the phone's missed-call and voicemail notifications are part of what the notifications feature brings to the Mac.

Whichever app you choose, a mirrored notification is not a call log. Clear it and the record is still in the Phone app on the phone, and nowhere on the Mac.

Can I listen to voicemail on the Mac?

Not through notification mirroring, which carries text and not audio. There are three routes to the recording.

Carrier voicemail

Google's basic method is to open the Phone app, tap Dialpad, and touch and hold 1. That is a call from the phone, and the Mac plays no part.

Visual voicemail in the Phone app

On some carriers the Phone app lists voicemails so you can tap one to play it. Google's page warns: "Not all carriers or countries/regions offer this feature." It names AT&T, Cellcom, Coriolis, Google Fi, O2, Orange, and T-Mobile. To turn it on:

  1. Open the Phone app.
  2. Tap More options, then Settings, then Voicemail.
  3. Turn on Visual voicemail.

Google notes that when you use your carrier's own voicemail app, "the visual voicemail feature on the Phone app turns off to avoid potential conflict".

On a shorter list of carriers and devices you can also turn on Voicemail transcription. Google says transcription "is only available in English and Spanish on Android 8.0 and up", and that the voicemails "aren't permanently stored by Google and are stored on your phone".

To get one particular recording to the Mac, Google's page gives a tip: expand the voicemail, tap Send to, and choose an app. Sending it to your own email puts the audio where the Mac can play it.

Google Voice

If your number is a Google Voice number, voicemail is no longer tied to the handset. Google's Voice help says you can "read voicemail transcripts in your inbox and search them like emails", and lists macOS and Safari, Chrome, Firefox, and Edge as supported. Its page on subscription types says the single-user plans "are only available in the US". This is the only route here where a missed call and its message are fully readable on the Mac with the phone switched off.

Which route fits?

What you wantUse
Not to miss the call in the first placeA tool that shows the call while it rings: KDE Connect for an alert, The Relay to accept or decline

To read what the voicemail saysVoicemail transcription on a supported carrier, read on the phone, or Google Voice in a browser
To hear a voicemail on the MacSend the recording to yourself from the Phone app, or Google Voice

When The Relay is not the right tool: it does not show a call history, does not play voicemail, and does not place a call back. It works when the phone and the Mac are on the same network or within Bluetooth range, so it will not tell you about a call while the phone is at home and you are not. Google Voice covers that case.

Why did the alert not show on the Mac?

CheckWhy
Is a Focus on?Apple's Focus guide says a Focus can "pause and silence all notifications or allow only certain notifications". Add your mirroring app under Allowed Apps.
Are notifications allowed for the mirroring app? Each app has an Allow notifications switch, per Apple's Notifications settings page.
Does the phone still show the notification? If the Phone app's notifications are off on the phone, there is nothing to mirror.

How do I test it in five minutes?

  1. Put the phone across the room with the Mac awake.
  2. Ring your number from another phone and let it ring out.
  3. Note what appeared on the Mac while it rang, and what remained afterwards.
  4. Ring again and leave a short voicemail. Note whether a second alert arrives and what it says.
  5. Repeat with the Mac's screen locked.

Questions people ask

Can I see my Android call history on a Mac?

Not as a list. The call history lives in the phone's Phone app, and neither Google nor Apple documents a Mac view of it. Mirrored notifications tell you about individual missed calls as they happen.

Does visual voicemail work on every carrier?

No. Google's page lists specific carriers and says not all carriers or countries offer it. If Voicemail does not appear in your Phone app, Google says to call your voicemail instead.

Will The Relay play my voicemail on the Mac?

No. It shows an incoming call, where you can accept or decline it, and it shows the phone's notifications. The recording stays with your carrier or on the phone.
