Is AirDrop any use on a Mac if I do not have an iPhone?
Yes, if your Mac has anyone to send to. AirDrop is built into macOS and does not need an iPhone. It works between a Mac and other Apple devices, and on some recent Android phones it now works with a Mac through Quick Share. If your phone is Android, the question to ask is whether your model is on Google's list. If it is, AirDrop is free and needs no app. If it is not, you have other ways to move files, listed below.
Publisher note: The Relay publishes this guide and is one of the products discussed. Details about other products come from each maker's own pages, checked on 26 October 2026. Prices and features change, so confirm before you buy.
What does AirDrop do on a Mac?
Apple's Continuity requirements page describes AirDrop as a way to "wirelessly send documents, photos, videos, websites, map locations, and more". It lists support for iPhone, iPad, Mac, and Apple Vision Pro, and states no iPhone requirement. The page does not mention an Apple Account for AirDrop, and Apple's AirDrop guide says the Mac can be set to receive from Contacts Only or Everyone.
A Mac with no other Apple device nearby has no one to AirDrop with. That is the usual reason people say AirDrop is useless to them. It is true until you add an Android phone that supports it.
How do I turn on AirDrop on a Mac?
From Apple's guide:
- Click the Control Center icon in the menu bar.
- Click the AirDrop icon. When it is blue, AirDrop is on.
- Click and hold the icon, or click the arrow beside it, to choose Contacts Only or Everyone.
Apple's page says both devices need Wi-Fi and Bluetooth on, and should be within 30 feet (10 meters) of each other. To receive from an Android phone you set the Mac to Everyone, as Google's page describes below. Apple's wording of the "Everyone for 10 Minutes" option is for iPhone and iPad, and it is not used in the Mac section of Apple's page.
Can an Android phone AirDrop to my Mac?
Some can. Google's Quick Share help page says sending to iPhone, iPad, or macOS works on the "Pixel 8a or later" and on "certain Samsung, Oppo, OnePlus, Vivo, Xiaomi, Honor, Transsion, and Motorola devices." It says the Apple user must select "Everyone for 10 minutes" in AirDrop settings. Google's device list names the exact models, and Google updates it, so check your own phone there instead of trusting this page. We keep a plain walk-through in AirDrop from Android to a Mac.
The steps are short.
- Set the Mac's AirDrop to Everyone. On a Samsung phone, Google's device list says to turn on Share with Apple devices in Quick Share settings.
- On the phone, select the file, tap Share, then Quick Share.
- Pick the Mac, then click Accept on the Mac.
Apple's page says "Most items are saved in the app that they're sent from", and that on a Mac some items are saved in the Downloads folder. Look there first.
What if my Android phone is not on the list?
Google's page says that for devices without AirDrop support, transfers use a QR code, and "both devices need internet access." The limits it gives are 10 GB every 24 hours and 1,000 files per session. The Pixel 10 guide's QR code section has the details. That is an upload and download through the internet, not a local copy.
For a local, free route on the same Wi-Fi network, NearDrop is a Mac app that speaks Quick Share. Its GitHub page says it is Wi-Fi LAN only, lives in the menu bar, and saves to your Downloads folder, and that to send from the Mac you right-click a file in Finder, choose Share, then NearDrop. See how to use NearDrop.
What does AirDrop not do for an Android user?
It does not give you a clipboard, notifications, calls, or text messages. It moves files, one transfer at a time, and you start each one by hand. If you want to see the phone in a window on the Mac and drag files back and forth, you want a file browser, not AirDrop.
Where does The Relay fit?
If your phone is on Google's list, AirDrop through Quick Share may be all you need for files, and it costs nothing. The Relay is for people who want more than files. Its file transfer and browsing shows the phone's storage in a window on the Mac, and you drag files either way over your local network, with no size limit set by the app. It also does the clipboard, notifications, texts and login codes, calls, and links.
It does not do AirDrop and it does not talk to an iPhone. It has no USB mode, and both devices need to be on the same network or within Bluetooth range. It needs Android 8.0 or later and macOS 13 Ventura or later. The Relay is one subscription through Google Play that covers your phone and your Mac, with a 7-day free trial, at /download.
