Copy an image on Android and paste it on a Mac

·6 min read

You cannot do it with what is built in. An Android phone and a Mac do not share a clipboard, so a picture you copy on the phone stays on the phone. To paste it straight into a document on the Mac you need a clipboard sync app that carries images, and not all of them do: KDE Connect's wiki says its clipboard "does not work with images", while The Relay's clipboard sync carries text, images, and links. The free workaround is to send the picture as a file with Quick Share and drag it in.

Publisher note: The Relay publishes this guide and is one of the products discussed. Details about other products come from each maker's own pages, checked on 1 October 2026. Prices and features change, so confirm before you buy.

What does "copy an image" mean on Android?

It is less uniform than copying text, and that explains most of the confusion.

Google's developer guide to copy and paste says the clipboard holds simple text directly, "while complex data is stored as a reference that the pasting application resolves with a content provider". A picture is the second kind. When an app puts an image on the clipboard, what sits there is a pointer to the image, and the app you paste into has to fetch it.

Two things follow.

  • Not every app offers it. Whether you see Copy or Copy image when you long-press a picture is up to the app. Many apps only offer Share.
  • You can see what you copied. The same guide says that starting in Android 13, the system "displays a standard visual confirmation when content is added to the clipboard" and that it "provides a preview of the copied content". If a small preview appears in a corner of the screen after you copy, the image is on the clipboard. If nothing appears on Android 13 or later, it probably is not.

For a screenshot, Google's screenshot help describes Share and Edit buttons on the preview that appears after you capture. Share is the dependable one.

Which tools can carry an image clipboard to a Mac?

Apple's feature is the one people are thinking of when they search for this. Its page describes copying "text, images, photos, and videos" on one Apple device and pasting on another. An Android phone cannot sign in to it. The background on why Android makes clipboard tools work harder is in Universal Clipboard for Android and Mac, so it is not repeated here.

How do I do it for free?

Treat the picture as a file, not as a clipboard item. It is two steps instead of one, and it works on every phone.

Quick Share to the Mac

  1. On the phone, open the picture and tap Share, then Quick Share.
  2. Choose the Mac.
  3. On the Mac, accept the transfer if asked. The picture normally lands in the Downloads folder. Drag it from there into your document.

Which Macs appear in step 2 depends on your setup. Google's Quick Share help says supported phones can send to a macOS device over AirDrop when the Mac is set to receive from everyone, and the list of phones is in AirDrop from Android to a Mac. On any other phone, the free Mac app NearDrop makes the Mac a Quick Share target on the same Wi-Fi network. Its README says it "lives in your menu bar and saves files to your downloads folder". Setup is in how to use NearDrop.

Google Photos in a browser

If the picture is already backed up, it is waiting for you on the Mac. Google's download page gives the steps: go to photos.google.com, select the photo, click More, then Download. This route needs backup turned on and a moment for the upload to finish, so it suits camera photos better than something you grabbed ten seconds ago.

Screenshots

A screenshot is the most common image people want to paste. The quickest routes for that one case are in getting screenshots from Android to a Mac.

How does it work with The Relay?

Copy the image on the phone, then press Command-V in the document on the Mac. That is the whole procedure. The Relay's clipboard sync works both ways and handles text, images, and links, so a picture copied on the Mac can be pasted on the phone as well.

Your clipboard travels directly between your phone and your Mac over your local network. It is not uploaded to The Relay's servers. The privacy policy has the detail. The app costs $19.99, paid once, from the download page, and needs Android 8.0 or later and macOS 13 Ventura or later.

When it is not the right tool:

  • The app you are copying from has no Copy option for images. No clipboard tool can sync what never reached the clipboard. Use Share and send the file instead. The Relay also moves files, so that route stays inside the same app.
  • You move a picture once a month. Quick Share is free and already on the phone.
  • The phone is not near the Mac. The Relay needs both devices on the same network or within Bluetooth range. Google Photos works from anywhere.
  • You want your whole photo library on the Mac. That is a sync job for Google Photos, which The Relay does not do. See transferring photos from Android to a Mac.

How do I test image paste in five minutes?

We have not measured any tool, so run this on yours.

  1. On the phone, open a photo in the app you use most and look for a Copy option. Note whether there is one.
  2. Copy it. On Android 13 or later, check that the preview appears.
  3. On the Mac, open a document and press Command-V. Note whether the picture arrives and how long you waited.
  4. Check the pasted picture's dimensions against the original. If they are smaller, the tool or the app scaled it down.
  5. Try again with the phone's screen having been off for ten minutes. A tool that only works while its app is open is a different thing.
  6. Repeat from a second app, such as your browser. Results vary by app.

Questions people ask

Does Apple's Universal Clipboard work with an Android phone?

No. Apple requires each device to be signed in with the same Apple Account and lists only Apple devices.

Can KDE Connect paste a picture from my phone?

Not through its clipboard. Its wiki says the clipboard plugin shares text and "does not work with images". KDE Connect can send a file to the computer, which gets the picture across in two steps.

Why is there no Copy option when I long-press a photo?

Because the app did not add one. Android leaves it to each app to put an image on the clipboard. Use the app's Share button and send the picture as a file.
