Nothing Phone to Mac: what works when Google's AirDrop list does not name Nothing
A Nothing Phone connects to a Mac the way any Android phone does: a data cable plus a free Mac app such as OpenMTP, or a free Wi-Fi app such as NearDrop or LocalSend. Google's AirDrop pages, as of 26 October 2026, do not name Nothing among the makers whose phones work with AirDrop in Quick Share, so do not plan around it. Texts work in a browser. A shared clipboard and notifications on the Mac need another app.
Publisher note: The Relay publishes this guide and is one of the products discussed. Details about other products come from each maker's own pages, checked on 26 October 2026. Prices and features change, so confirm before you buy.
Can a Nothing Phone AirDrop to a Mac?
Google's pages do not say so. The Quick Share help page names these makers for AirDrop support: Samsung, Oppo, OnePlus, Vivo, Xiaomi, Honor, Transsion, and Motorola, plus Pixel 8a and later. Nothing is not in that sentence. The compatible-device list also names no Nothing model.
That could change, and Google updates its list, so open it before you give up. Until then, a Nothing Phone has two ways to reach a Mac without a cable.
First, Quick Share's QR code, which Google says works for devices without AirDrop support. You pick the files, scan the code with the Mac, open the link, and download. Google's page says the files are end-to-end encrypted and stay on its servers for 24 hours, with a limit of 10 GB every 24 hours and 1,000 files per session, and that both devices need internet access.
Second, a local app, below.
Which Wi-Fi app suits a Nothing Phone and a Mac?
| App | Per its own page | A good fit when |
|---|---|---|
| NearDrop | Unofficial Mac app that implements part of Quick Share. Same Wi-Fi network. Receives into Downloads after a PIN check. Mac to Android uses a QR code NearDrop shows, or the Quick Share button in Google Files on non-Samsung phones | You mostly send from the phone to the Mac |
| LocalSend | Open-source, runs on Android 7.0 or later and macOS 11 or later. No internet or third-party servers. A router with AP isolation can block it | You want the same app on both devices and both directions |
NearDrop's page also warns that local network transfers can fail on some public networks, such as coffee shops or hotels. If a device does not appear, check LocalSend device not showing and NearDrop not working.
How do I connect a Nothing Phone to a Mac with a USB cable?
Google's USB help page covers Windows and Chromebook. A Mac needs an app, and OpenMTP is a free one for macOS 10.14 Mojave or higher.
- Install OpenMTP.
- Unlock the phone and plug in a data cable. Google's advice is "Not all USB cables can transfer files."
- Tap the USB notification, worded Charging this device via USB on stock Android, and under Use USB for choose File Transfer.
- If there is no notification, OpenMTP's guide says to search Settings for USB or USB Preferences.
- Drag files in OpenMTP.
Nothing has a support page for phones that will not connect to a computer. Check it for the screens on your Phone model, because our steps use Google's and OpenMTP's wording, and the labels on a Nothing Phone may differ. We could not confirm how your phone's labels read, so look for the option that says file transfer. Next steps if it still fails: why a Mac does not recognise an Android phone.
What about texts and calls on the Mac?
Texts first: Google Messages for web works in a browser on the Mac. Google's page describes pairing through your Google Account with a matching emoji, says SMS is sent through your phone, and says carrier fees apply. It handles replies too. See Android messages on a Mac.
For the clipboard, notifications, and calls, the free tools above do not cover a Mac.
Where does The Relay fit for a Nothing Phone?
Because AirDrop is not confirmed for Nothing, the gap is wider here than on a Pixel or a recent Galaxy. A Nothing owner on a Mac has file apps and nothing for the day-to-day glue. The Relay adds a clipboard that works both ways, the phone's notifications on the Mac, incoming calls to accept or decline, login codes from texts copied to the Mac's clipboard, link handoff, and a Mac window that browses the phone's files. It needs Android 8.0 or later and macOS 13 Ventura or later, with both devices on the same network or in Bluetooth range. The Relay is one subscription through Google Play that covers your phone and your Mac, with a 7-day free trial.
It does not use USB, send texts from the Mac, or mirror the screen. We have not tested it on any specific Nothing model, so use the trial to check yours. For files alone, NearDrop or LocalSend costs nothing.
