How to use a Pixel phone as a webcam on a Mac

·6 min read

To use a Pixel phone as a webcam on a Mac, connect it with a USB data cable, tap the Charging this device through USB notification on the phone, and select Webcam under "Use USB for". The Pixel then appears to the Mac as an ordinary USB camera that you choose in your video app. No app is needed on either side. The catch on macOS is the cable: Android's own documentation says webcam mode does not work with USB 3.0 or later cables on a Mac, so a plain USB 2.0 data cable is the one to try.

Publisher note: The Relay publishes this guide and is one of the products discussed. Details about other products come from each maker's own pages, checked on 1 October 2026. Prices and features change, so confirm before you buy.

This page covers the Pixel route in detail. For every other way to do it on any Android phone, see how to use an Android phone as a webcam for a Mac.

What does Google say the Pixel webcam mode does?

Google's help page, Use your Pixel phone as a webcam, is short. The main points:

  • You need "a USB cable that supports data". A charge-only cable will not do.
  • "The webcam works on any device that has USB Video Class (UVC) support implemented, such as laptops, TVs, cars, and other phones and tablets."
  • You can keep using the phone while it is a webcam. Google says you can "navigate to other apps or turn off the screen".
  • The phone "charges normally over USB while in webcam mode".

USB Video Class is the standard that lets a plug-in camera work without a driver from its maker. A Pixel in webcam mode presents itself as that kind of camera.

Two things the page does not say. It does not name macOS, and it does not list which Pixel models have the feature. The Android Open Source Project page, Use a device as a webcam, fills in both gaps as far as anyone has in writing: the feature exists "for devices running Android 14 QPR1 or higher", and it lets hosts with different operating systems, "for example, Linux, macOS, Windows, and ChromeOS", use the phone's camera. So the practical check for your Pixel is to plug it in and look for the Webcam option.

How do I turn a Pixel into a Mac webcam?

These are Google's steps, with the Mac side added.

  1. Connect the Pixel to the Mac with a USB cable that carries data. Use a USB 2.0 cable if you have one, for the reason in the next section.
  2. Unlock the phone and pull down the notification shade. Tap the Charging this device through USB notification.
  3. Under "Use USB for", select Webcam.
  4. Tap the Webcam notification that appears at the top of the screen. Google's tip says this is where you "adjust and preview your webcam". The Android documentation describes that preview screen as the place to choose the front or back camera, set the zoom, and tap to focus.
  5. On the Mac, open your video app and choose the phone from its camera menu. If the app was already open, quit it and open it again so it looks for cameras afresh.

If Webcam is not in the list at step 3, your Pixel does not offer the feature on its current software. Update the phone and look again.

Why does my Mac not see the Pixel?

Start with the cable. The Android documentation says:

Android devices in webcam mode don't work with USB 3.0+ cables on macOS hosts because of a bug with Apple's UVC driver.

A basic USB 2.0 data cable is the one this mode wants on a Mac. Cables are rarely labelled with their type, so you may have to try two or three.

SymptomWhat to check
No Webcam choice under "Use USB for"The phone's software does not offer it. Update the phone, or use an app.
Webcam is selected, Mac lists no new cameraSwap to a USB 2.0 data cable. Quit and reopen the video app.
No USB notification at allThe cable is charge-only. Google asks for one "that supports data".
Picture is replaced by a blocked-camera logoAnother app on the phone took the camera. See below.
Picture works, no sound from the phoneExpected. Google's page describes a webcam and says nothing about the microphone. Pick a different microphone on the Mac.

What happens when the Pixel needs its own camera?

Google's page is specific: "When you receive a video call or use an app that requires a camera, webcam stream pauses. The webcam feed shows a camera access blocked logo and it automatically resumes after you're done." Before a meeting that matters, turn on Do Not Disturb so a video call does not interrupt your picture.

What are the wireless options for a Pixel?

The USB mode is free and worth ten minutes of testing. If the cable problem defeats you, or you want the phone on a tripod with no wire, these are the other routes.

The RelayThe phone's camera and microphone appear on the Mac wirelessly, over your local network.$19.99, paid once

With The Relay, the phone works as a Mac webcam and microphone: both appear on the Mac as devices that apps such as Zoom, Google Meet, and FaceTime can select. That covers the gap the USB mode leaves, since Google's steps set up the camera only. The same app also syncs the clipboard, moves files, and shows the Pixel's notifications, texts, and incoming calls on the Mac. It needs Android 8.0 or later and macOS 13 Ventura or later, and comes from the download page.

It is not the right pick if the USB mode already works for you and a cable does not bother you. That route costs nothing. It is also the wrong pick if you want a cable for reliability, because The Relay has no USB mode. And if fine control over the picture is what you are after, Camo is the specialist. We have not measured picture quality or delay for any of these, so run a practice call with whichever you choose.

Questions people ask

Which Pixel phones can be used as a webcam?

Google's help page does not list models. The Android documentation says the feature is for devices running Android 14 QPR1 or higher. The reliable test is on the phone itself: connect it to a computer, open the USB notification, and see whether Webcam is offered.

Does the Pixel webcam mode work with a MacBook?

Android's documentation names macOS among the supported hosts, and Google's Pixel page says the webcam works on any device with UVC support. The known obstacle is the cable: USB 3.0 and later cables do not work in this mode on macOS. Test with a USB 2.0 data cable before a real meeting.

Does the Mac get the Pixel's microphone over USB?

Google's page describes a webcam and does not mention audio. Plan on using the MacBook's own microphone or a headset. If you want the phone's microphone on the Mac as well, that is something The Relay provides.
