Universal Clipboard for Android: what it is and what comes nearest
There is no Universal Clipboard for Android. Apple's feature works only between Apple devices signed in to the same Apple Account, so an Android phone cannot take part. What you can have with a Mac is the same behaviour built another way: copy on the phone, paste on the Mac. KDE Connect does it for text, for free, with a tap on the phone. The Relay does it both ways for text, images, and links.
Publisher note: The Relay publishes this guide and is one of the products discussed. Details about other products come from each maker's own pages, checked on 26 October 2026. Prices and features change, so confirm before you buy.
What is Universal Clipboard, in Apple's words?
Apple's Universal Clipboard page says you can "copy content such as text, images, photos, and videos on one Apple device" and paste it on another. Its list of requirements is short:
- The devices are near each other.
- Each is "signed in with the same Apple Account".
- Bluetooth and Wi-Fi are on.
- Handoff is on, which it is by default.
Apple adds two limits. The copied content stays on the shared clipboard only briefly, and copying something else on either device replaces it. Apple's Continuity requirements table gives the software floor as iOS 10 or later or any iPadOS, and macOS Sierra 10.12 or later.
Nothing on those pages is a technical barrier you could switch off. The Apple Account is the entry ticket. That is the same reason Handoff is closed to Android, covered in Handoff for Android and a Mac.
What does Android do on its own?
Nothing that reaches a Mac. Android has a clipboard on the phone, and a Mac has one on the Mac, and no built-in feature joins them. Everything below is something you add.
This matters for a second reason. Since Android 10, an app running in the background cannot read the clipboard, which is why the free tools below ask you to tap something on the phone. That is an Android rule, not a flaw in any one app.
What is the free nearest thing?
KDE Connect describes a Clipboard plugin that shares the clipboard between devices. The wiki's details are the useful part:
- It works for text. The wiki says it does not support images.
- On Android 10 or later, you tap a Send Clipboard button or tile on the phone to push what you copied.
- Text copied on the computer is available on the phone straight away.
The KDE Connect wiki points to its download page for installation links, macOS included, so treat the Mac side as something to try for ten minutes rather than a promise. If your need is one snippet now and then, this is a reasonable answer, and it costs nothing. The longer tour is in KDE Connect on a Mac.
For web addresses only, Chrome's Send to your devices works if you are signed in to Chrome with the same Google Account on both devices. It sends the tab, not the clipboard.
How does the nearest paid option compare?
| Apple Universal Clipboard | KDE Connect | The Relay | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Needs | Same Apple Account | Free app on each device | App on phone and Mac, no account with The Relay |
| Direction | Both | Both for text; tap on the phone to send | Both |
| Content | Text, images, photos, videos, files | Text | Text, images, and links |
We have not timed any of these, so the practical test is yours: copy a sentence and a screenshot on the phone, press Command-V in a Mac document, and note how many taps it took.
How do I check a clipboard sync works?
- Copy one line of text on the phone. Paste it into Notes on the Mac.
- Copy a different line on the Mac. Paste it into a message on the phone.
- Take a screenshot on the phone and copy it, then paste it into a Mac document. If only the text arrives, the tool does not do images.
- Lock the phone for a minute and repeat step 1, so you know whether it still works with the screen off.
Where does The Relay fit?
The Relay is the option to look at if you want the whole of Universal Clipboard's job done, images included, with the phone and Mac simply paired. Its clipboard sync copies text, images, and links in both directions between an Android 8.0 or later phone and a Mac on macOS 13 Ventura or later. It travels between your devices over your local network, not through The Relay's servers, and there is no account with The Relay. It is not free after the trial, and it will not work when the phone is on a different network. If you copy a few snippets a week, KDE Connect probably covers you. The Relay is one subscription through Google Play that covers your phone and your Mac, with a 7-day free trial at /download.
Questions people ask
Is there a Universal Clipboard for Android?
No. Apple's feature needs every device signed in with the same Apple Account, and Apple's pages describe only Apple devices.
Can I copy on my Android phone and paste on my Mac?
Yes, with an added app. KDE Connect does it for text. The Relay does text, images, and links.
Does Universal Clipboard work with a Samsung or Pixel phone?
No. The maker of the Android phone makes no difference, because the barrier is the Apple Account.
Why do I have to tap a button on my phone?
On Android 10 and later, background apps cannot read the clipboard. KDE Connect's wiki describes the Send Clipboard button for that reason.
