How do I use an Apple Account with an Android phone?
You can create and use an Apple Account with an Android phone as your only phone. The Mac is the Apple device. When Apple asks for a verification code and no other Apple device is at hand, it sends the code to your trusted phone number as a text message or phone call, and that number can be the one in your Android phone. Apple's sign-in page gives the steps. The one habit that matters is keeping that number current, since it is how you get back in.

How do I create an Apple Account without an iPhone?
Apple's page on creating an Apple Account has separate steps for a Mac and for the web.
On a Mac:
- Choose Apple menu, then System Settings.
- Click Sign in in the sidebar.
- Click Don't Have an Account? and follow the steps to enter your birthday, an email address, a password, and your region.
- Enter payment details or choose None. Apple says you will not be charged until you make a purchase.
- Confirm your phone number. Apple says this "can help to verify your identity and recover your account if needed."
- Verify your email address using the message Apple sends.
On the web, go to account.apple.com and click Create Your Apple Account. Apple asks for an email address, a password, and a device region, then for your birthday and "a phone number that you can always access", and has you verify both the email and the number.
Notice the wording: a phone number you can always access. That is your Android number, and it deserves some thought, covered below.
What is a trusted phone number?
Apple's two-factor authentication page says the six-digit code is "automatically displayed on your trusted devices or sent to your trusted phone number." A trusted device is an Apple device you are already signed in on. A trusted phone number is a number that can receive a code. Apple's page on getting a code says you will get "a text message or phone call from Apple."
Apple's own pages do not say the number has to belong to an iPhone, and nothing in the steps above asks for one. A number on an Android phone receives text messages and calls like any other.
How does the code reach me when my only phone is Android?
The first time you sign in on a new device or browser, Apple shows a code on your trusted devices. If the Mac is your only Apple device, you have none, so you ask for a text instead.
- On the verification screen, select Didn't Get a Code? or Can't get to your devices?
- Choose to have the code sent to your trusted phone number.
- Wait for the text message or phone call from Apple.
- Enter the code on the device you are signing in on.
Apple notes that if you filter Unknown Senders in Messages, you should check there, and that time-sensitive messages like verification codes can still arrive when you screen unknown senders. On Android, look in whichever messaging app owns the number, and check any spam or "unknown sender" folder in it.
Why is the trusted number the thing to protect?
Because with no second Apple device it is your only way in. Apple says that to enrol in two-factor authentication you must verify at least one trusted phone number. Its sign-in page says you can add "additional trusted phone numbers to your account for the future", so add a second number that belongs to someone you trust, or to a second SIM, once you are in.
If you change SIM or number, update it in your account before you give up the old number. If you permanently lose access to both your trusted devices and your trusted number, Apple's page says you can attempt account recovery by choosing the "Can't use" option for your number on the code screen. The pages we checked give no recovery time, so we cannot say how long it takes.
Can I get the code on the Mac instead of the phone?
Not from Apple, directly. A text still lands on the phone. If the phone is across the room and you do not want to type six digits from memory, you can read it from the phone's screen. A tool can also bring the code to the Mac.
The Relay's texts and one-time codes feature shows a text that arrives on the phone on the Mac, and copies the login code in it to the Mac's clipboard, so you can paste it. It will not help with a code that arrives as a phone call, and it does not send texts. It needs Android 8.0 or later and macOS 13 Ventura or later. The Relay is one subscription through Google Play that covers your phone and your Mac, with a 7-day free trial. If you only sign in to Apple a few times a year, reading the code off the phone is fine. For a daily flow of codes from banks and work accounts, see two-factor codes on a Mac, and try the trial at /download if that is your life.
What will an Apple Account not do on Android?
An Apple Account is what Apple's Continuity features hang off, and those features work between Apple devices. Apple's Continuity page lists calls and texts relayed through an iPhone, iPhone as a Mac webcam, and Universal Clipboard as Apple-device features. Your Android phone does not join them by having the same Apple Account. See what is Apple Continuity.
