Can I use a MacBook without an iPhone, and what do I lose?
Yes. A MacBook is a full computer and does not need an iPhone to run. What you lose is a short list of features that Apple built around the iPhone: calls and text messages relayed through it, using it as the Mac's webcam, and controlling it from the Mac. Several Continuity features, including AirDrop, Handoff, and Universal Clipboard, are not iPhone-only. With an Android phone you replace the lost ones with other tools, some free.
Publisher note: The Relay publishes this guide and is one of the products discussed. Details about other products come from each maker's own pages, checked on 26 October 2026. Prices and features change, so confirm before you buy.
Which Mac features need an iPhone?
Apple's Continuity requirements page is the list to read. Going through the entries for Mac, these name the iPhone as the device you need:
| Feature | What Apple says | Needs an iPhone? |
|---|---|---|
| iPhone Cellular Calls | Make and receive calls from your Mac or iPad when on the same network as your iPhone | Yes, with an activated carrier plan |
| Text Message Forwarding | Send and receive SMS, MMS, or RCS messages from your iPhone on your Mac or iPad | Yes |
| Continuity Camera webcam | "Use your iPhone as a webcam for Mac" | Yes |
| Continuity Camera photos and scans | Use your iPhone or iPad to take photos and scan documents on Mac | iPhone or iPad |
| iPhone Mirroring | Interact with your iPhone and its apps from your Mac | Yes |
Without an iPhone you cannot use these as Apple describes them, except that an iPad can stand in for the photos and scans row. The page says nothing about using an Android phone for any of them.
Which ones still work without an iPhone?
Apple's page lists these for several device types, not only the iPhone:
- AirDrop sends files between Apple devices. It lists no iPhone requirement. A second Apple device is needed, such as another Mac or an iPad. Some Android phones can also send to it. See AirDrop without an iPhone.
- Handoff and Universal Clipboard work between a Mac and other Apple devices, including an iPad. Apple's Universal Clipboard page says to use it "with any Mac, iPhone, iPad, or Apple Vision Pro". Each device has to be signed in with the same Apple Account.
- Instant Hotspot connects to a Personal Hotspot on an iPhone or iPad, so an iPad with a plan can do it.
The things that were never about the iPhone still work: the Apple Account, the App Store, iCloud, and everything that runs on the Mac itself. For setting up the account, see using an Apple Account with an Android phone.
What about iMessage and FaceTime?
iMessage works on a Mac with an Apple Account, but you cannot send green-bubble texts to phone numbers without an iPhone. Our guide covers the details: iMessage on a Mac without an iPhone. FaceTime has its own page: FaceTime on a Mac without an iPhone.
What do I use instead with an Android phone?
| You miss | Free option | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Texts on the Mac | Google Messages for web | Google's help page says it sends SMS "using a connection from your computer to your phone" and works in Safari, Chrome, Firefox, and Edge |
| Files | Quick Share to AirDrop on supported phones; NearDrop or LocalSend | See every way to transfer files |
| Phone as webcam | Wired mode on some phones, which you would need to test | See phone as a webcam |
| Calls on the Mac | None that we can document from a maker's page | A paid option below |
| Copy and paste between devices | KDE Connect, or links through Chrome | See clipboard sync |
For the wider picture, does a MacBook work with Android is the starting guide, and setting up an Android phone with a Mac takes you through the first hour.
Where does The Relay fit?
The Relay is for the gap in the table: calls, notifications, the clipboard, texts and login codes, files, links, and the phone as a webcam and microphone, with an Android phone and a Mac. You install it on both and pair with a QR code. The calls feature shows an incoming call on the Mac, where you can accept or decline it.
It does not copy Apple's whole set. It cannot send texts from the Mac, it has no screen mirroring or remote control of the phone, and it does not do AirDrop or iMessage. It needs both devices on the same network or in Bluetooth range, Android 8.0 or later, and macOS 13 Ventura or later. The Relay is one subscription through Google Play that covers your phone and your Mac, with a 7-day free trial. If you only want files and the odd text, the free tools above are enough. The trial is at /download.
Questions people ask
Do I need an iPhone to set up a new MacBook?
You can sign in or create an Apple Account on the Mac itself, in System Settings, per Apple's steps. Apple asks you to confirm a phone number. It does not say it must be an iPhone's.
Can a MacBook use an Android phone as a hotspot?
Our guides cover it: see Android hotspot on a Mac, and Android hotspot not working on a Mac if it fails. Check Google's tethering page for current limits.
Is a MacBook worse without an iPhone?
It is the same computer. You give up the features in the first table, and nothing else on this page is lost.
