OpenMTP not working: what its own troubleshooting guide says to check

·6 min read

When OpenMTP is not working, the usual symptom is a blank right-hand pane: the app opens but the phone is not there. The project's own guidance, in order, is to restart the Mac, quit every other app that might be reading USB devices, make sure the phone is unlocked and set to File transfer, and on a Samsung phone, quit Samsung Smart Switch. If the app will not launch at all, the README points to the macOS version first.

Every cause and fix on this page comes from OpenMTP's FAQ, its connection guide, its README, and the troubleshooting list its developer keeps on GitHub. We have not added causes of our own.

What should I try first?

The troubleshooting list on GitHub puts the steps in this order. Follow it as written, because the early steps are the cheap ones.

  1. Reboot the Mac. It is the only step marked "IMPORTANT".
  2. On macOS Ventura or above, quit Preview.
  3. Quit conflicting apps completely, then relaunch OpenMTP. The list names Google Drive, Dropbox, Preview, Smart Switch, Garmin Express, OneDrive, iMovie, and Lightroom.
  4. Uninstall Samsung watch drivers, if you ever installed any.
  5. Check for applications locking USB ports. In the list's words: "Some applications might lock onto the USB port once they detect a USB drive."
  6. Disable Hotplug detection in OpenMTP's Settings, reconnect the phone, and click Refresh.
  7. On a Samsung phone, make sure file transfer is enabled and that you accepted the "Enable MTP data access" prompt.
  8. Uninstall Samsung Smart Switch. The list says this has helped some users.

What is different on a Samsung Galaxy?

Samsung phones get their own section in the guide, and two things differ.

The prompt. A Galaxy asks "Allow access to phone data?" Tap Allow. If no prompt appears, tap the USB notification and choose Transferring files.

Smart Switch. The guide says: "If OpenMTP goes blank, or the device isn't detected, when you connect, quit Samsung Smart Switch and try again. It can block other apps from reaching the phone over MTP." And then: "Still blank? Uninstalling Smart Switch has fixed the problem for some users." It links to instructions for removing Smart Switch and its drivers from a Mac. Older Samsung software counts too: the guide names Kies among the apps to quit.

If you rely on Smart Switch for backups, you can keep it. Just quit it fully before opening OpenMTP. What Smart Switch does is covered in Smart Switch for Mac.

OpenMTP will not open at all. What now?

The README's troubleshooting section starts with the macOS version.

  • macOS 10.14 Mojave or later: the current release should run. Check that you downloaded the right build. The FAQ says Macs sold from late 2020 onwards use Apple silicon and older ones use Intel, and that OpenMTP "ships a separate build for each". Apple menu, About This Mac tells you which you have.
  • macOS 10.13 High Sierra or earlier: the README says to use OpenMTP v3.1.15 with Legacy MTP mode, and to turn off auto-update, "otherwise the app will replace itself with a version your Mac cannot run". Its steps: drag the app into Applications, turn off the internet, launch it, open Settings, turn off auto-update in the Update tab, then turn the internet back on.

Also check where you got it. The README warns that there are "copycat websites that use the OpenMTP name, logo and content". The official sources are openmtp.ganeshrvel.com, the GitHub repository, and Homebrew. If your copy came from anywhere else, delete it and download again.

Still stuck?

The site's advice is to "search the existing issues on GitHub, or open a new one with your Mac and phone model". Include the macOS version, the OpenMTP version, and what you have already tried. The project is maintained: v3.3.0 was published on 22 August 2026, and the site says a new generation of the app is in development.

OpenMTP also notes that individual devices "can vary with the manufacturer's MTP implementation". If your particular phone will not cooperate, the remaining options are a different tool.

What can I use if OpenMTP will not work with my phone?

Publisher note: The Relay publishes this guide and is one of the products discussed. Details about other products come from each maker's own pages, checked on 1 October 2026. Prices and features change, so confirm before you buy.

MacDroid's ADB mode is worth knowing about here, because it does not use MTP. Its FAQ suggests it when another app is holding the MTP connection.

The Relay avoids USB altogether. Its file transfer and browsing shows the phone's storage in a window on the Mac, and you drag files either way over your local network. That sidesteps every row in the table above, since none of them apply without a cable. It is paid, it needs both devices on the same network, and it has no USB mode, so it does not replace OpenMTP when a cable is what you need. The full list is in OpenMTP alternatives.

Questions people ask

Does OpenMTP work with Samsung phones?

Yes, according to its FAQ, with one condition: "If the app goes blank when you connect a Samsung phone, uninstall Samsung Smart Switch." The connection guide suggests quitting Smart Switch first.

Do I need USB debugging for OpenMTP?

No. Its steps use only the phone's File transfer mode. Nothing in its guide mentions Developer options.

Does OpenMTP work over Wi-Fi if the cable is the problem?

No. The FAQ's answer to "Can OpenMTP transfer files wirelessly?" is "No." For wireless transfer you need a different tool.
