Samsung DeX on a Mac: does it work?

·6 min read

No. As of 25 October 2026, Samsung DeX does not work with a Mac. Samsung's current DeX pages describe it as a desktop-style mode that a Galaxy phone or tablet shows on an external monitor or TV, over an HDMI cable or wirelessly to a TV that supports Miracast, and neither page mentions a Mac or offers a Mac app. Samsung did once make a DeX app for computers, called DeX for PC, but news reports say the Mac version ended in January 2022 and the Windows version would end support from One UI 7. If you want your Galaxy's screen on your MacBook, the closest free tool is scrcpy, which mirrors and controls the phone but is not DeX.

What does Samsung DeX do?

Samsung's US DeX page calls it a way to turn a Galaxy phone or tablet into a "PC-like workstation." Its UK DeX page adds the details, and both opened normally on 25 October 2026:

  • Windows on a big screen. Apps open in resizable windows, "just like on your desktop."
  • Workspaces. Up to four workspaces, with up to five apps open at once in each. A sixth app minimizes the first one you opened.
  • Your phone as the mouse. The phone screen works as a trackpad, or as an on-screen keyboard.
  • Wired or wireless. The UK page says DeX works "with or without a wired connection." The wired route is an HDMI cable to a monitor or TV. Wireless DeX connects to a smart TV or display, and Samsung's footnote says the wireless connection works only with TVs that support "Android smartphone screen mirroring (Miracast)."
  • Extended mode needs Android 16. The UK page says launching DeX with long-press and drop, multiple desktops, and Extended mode require Android 16 or higher.

Which Galaxy phones support DeX?

Samsung's UK page lists, among others, the Galaxy S8 through S26 series, the Note8 to Note20 series, the Fold through Z Fold8 and Z Fold8 Ultra, the Z Flip7 and Z Flip8, and many Galaxy Tab S models. It also lists exceptions, so check your exact model there:

  • The Galaxy S26 FE does not support DeX over an HDMI cable.
  • The Galaxy Z Flip7 FE supports neither HDMI DeX nor wireless DeX to a TV or monitor.
  • Several tablets, including the Tab S9 FE and Tab S10 Lite, support neither HDMI nor wireless DeX to a TV or monitor.

The US page says DeX is compatible with "most Galaxy smartphones and Galaxy Tabs" and that some functions differ between devices.

Why doesn't DeX work on a Mac anymore?

Because the computer app is gone. For a few years Samsung offered DeX for PC, an app that showed DeX in a window on a Windows PC or a Mac. Neither of Samsung's DeX pages mentions it today. What we know about its end comes from news reports that quote Samsung pages we could not open in their original form:

DateWhat was reportedSource
12 November 2021Samsung's DeX page carried the notice "The DeX for PC service for Mac/Windows 7 OS will be terminated as of January 2022."SamMobile
29 November 2024Samsung's UK DeX page said "The DeX for PC on Windows OS will end support from One UI 7 version," and pointed users to Microsoft's Link to WindowsAndroid Authority

We say "reported" because the notices are no longer on the pages. The UK DeX page we opened on 25 October 2026 has no DeX for PC section at all. SamMobile's report also said Mac users could still use DeX with a DeX dock or a USB-C to HDMI cable to a monitor. That is still how DeX works, but the Mac is not part of it.

Can I use my Mac as a DeX monitor?

Samsung does not say so. One footnote on its US page mentions "TVs, monitors and PCs" that support standard video input, Miracast, Smart View or Wireless DeX, but it does not name a Mac, and the UK page's wireless instructions are written for smart TVs and displays. We found no Samsung or Apple page that describes using a Mac as a DeX screen. If a page you find claims it works, look for a date and a source before you buy cables.

What can I use on a Mac instead?

It depends on what you wanted DeX for.

What you wantedOptionWhat its maker says
A desktop with your phone's apps, on a monitorDeX itself, with a monitor or TVSamsung's pages: HDMI cable or wireless to a Miracast TV. The Mac is not involved
The phone's screen on your Mac, controlled with the Mac's mouse and keyboardscrcpy, freeIts README says it displays and controls Android devices on macOS, over USB or Wi-Fi, needs Android 5.0 or later and USB debugging, and can open an app in a separate virtual display
A paid app that mirrors and controls without TerminalAirDroid and othersSee Samsung DeX alternatives for Mac
Files, notifications, texts, and the clipboard on the MacA continuity appSee below

scrcpy is the closest thing to "my Galaxy on my MacBook's screen." It is not DeX: you get the phone's own interface, not Samsung's desktop. Setup takes a few minutes in Terminal, which our guide to mirroring Android to a Mac walks through.

If what you really wanted was to stop reaching for the phone while you work at the Mac, a continuity app may suit you better than a second screen. The Relay covers that kind of job. It browses the phone's storage from a Mac window, syncs the clipboard both ways, and shows the phone's notifications, texts, login codes, and incoming calls on the Mac. It does not mirror the screen or let you control the phone, so it is not a DeX replacement. It needs Android 8.0 or later and macOS 13 Ventura or later. The Relay is one subscription through Google Play that covers your phone and your Mac, with a 7-day free trial.

Questions people ask

Is there a Samsung DeX app for Mac?

Not as of 25 October 2026. Samsung's DeX pages offer no Mac app. SamMobile reported in November 2021 that Samsung's DeX for PC service for Mac would end in January 2022.

Does Samsung DeX work on a MacBook over USB-C?

Samsung does not describe that anywhere. Its pages describe wired DeX as a cable from the phone to a monitor or TV, and none of them mentions a MacBook or any other computer as the screen.

Can wireless DeX connect to a Mac?

Samsung's footnote says wireless DeX works with TVs that support Miracast, and its instructions are written for smart TVs and displays. No Samsung page we found names a Mac as a wireless DeX target.

What happened to DeX for PC on Windows?

Android Authority reported in November 2024 that Samsung's UK page said DeX for PC on Windows would end support from One UI 7, and recommended Microsoft's Link to Windows instead. That notice is no longer on the page.

What is the best free way to see my Galaxy screen on a Mac?

scrcpy. It is free and open source, runs on macOS, and mirrors and controls an Android phone over USB or Wi-Fi once USB debugging is on. It shows the phone's normal screen, not the DeX desktop.
