Pixel 9 to Mac: what works over AirDrop, cable and Wi-Fi

·5 min read

A Pixel 9, Pixel 9 Pro, Pixel 9 Pro XL, or Pixel 9 Pro Fold can send files to a Mac over AirDrop through Quick Share, with nothing to install. Google's help page also says the Pixel 9 family can receive from a Mac, with one exception it states for the Pixel 9a. For a cable you need a free Mac app such as OpenMTP, because a Mac cannot open an Android phone by itself. Texts work in a browser. A shared clipboard and notifications do not come with the phone.

Publisher note: The Relay publishes this guide and is one of the products discussed. Details about other products come from each maker's own pages, checked on 26 October 2026. Prices and features change, so confirm before you buy.

Does a Pixel 9 support AirDrop to a Mac?

Yes. Google's Quick Share help page says that, as of 26 October 2026, sending to Apple devices, which includes macOS, needs a "Pixel 8a or later", so every Pixel 9 qualifies. Receiving from an Apple device needs a "Pixel 9 and later, except Pixel 9a".

Here is the wrinkle with the Pixel 9a. Google's second page, the compatible-device list, names the Pixel 9a among compatible phones and gives no separate caveat. The help page says it cannot receive. The two Google pages are not worded the same, so if you own a 9a, try both directions and read both pages again before you rely on either. Sending from the 9a to a Mac is covered by both.

The Pixel 9 family's neighbours are covered elsewhere. For the newer phones, see Pixel 10 and a Mac. For the whole range, including the Pixel 8 and older, see Pixel to Mac file transfer.

How do I send a file from a Pixel 9 to a Mac?

  1. On the Mac, open Control Center, click AirDrop, and choose Everyone.
  2. On the Pixel, open the file or photo, tap Share, then Quick Share.
  3. Select the Mac in the list.
  4. Click Accept on the Mac.

Google's page says to wait for the Mac user to accept the AirDrop notification. If the Mac never appears, Quick Share and AirDrop not working has a checklist.

How do I send a file from a Mac to a Pixel 9?

Set Quick Share visibility on the Pixel to Everyone for 10 minutes, or stay on the Quick Share screen in receive mode. On the Mac, select the file, click the Share button, choose AirDrop, and pick the Pixel. Apple's AirDrop guide covers the Mac side. Accept on the Pixel. Google's page says files land in the Files app, under Downloads, in a Quick Share folder.

How do I connect a Pixel 9 to a Mac with a USB cable?

Google's USB help page has steps for Windows and Chromebook. It has none for a Mac. On Windows its last step says a file transfer window opens on the computer. A Mac does not do that, so you add an app.

  1. Install OpenMTP. Its page lists macOS 10.14 Mojave or higher and describes drag and drop and transfers of files larger than 4 GB.
  2. Unlock the Pixel and plug it in with a data cable. Google's own advice is "Not all USB cables can transfer files."
  3. Tap the Charging this device via USB notification.
  4. Under Use USB for, choose File Transfer.
  5. Drag files across in OpenMTP.

If OpenMTP's page shows no phone, OpenMTP not working and why a Mac does not recognise an Android phone go through the causes in order.

Which is better for a Pixel 9: AirDrop or a cable?

SituationUse
A few photos or a PDF, nowAirDrop through Quick Share
Hundreds of files or a whole folderUSB cable and OpenMTP
Sending to someone else's iPhone or MacAirDrop, or Quick Share's QR code if the other device lacks AirDrop
Same files every dayGoogle Photos backup, or an always-on option such as The Relay's file window

We have not timed any of these, so test with your own files. A good five-minute test: copy the same 20 photos both ways and see which you would repeat tomorrow.

What about texts, the clipboard, and notifications?

For texts, Google Messages for web works with a Pixel and any browser on the Mac. Google's page describes pairing with your Google Account by matching an emoji, and says the messages are sent through your phone, so carrier fees apply.

For the clipboard, notifications, and calls, Google's Pixel and Quick Share pages describe nothing for a Mac. That is the part an iPhone user gets from Apple for free, and it is the part The Relay was built for.

When is The Relay worth it with a Pixel 9?

The Relay installs on the phone and the Mac, pairs by scanning a QR code on the Mac, and then syncs the clipboard in both directions, shows the phone's notifications as Mac notifications, shows incoming calls to accept or decline, copies login codes from texts to the Mac's clipboard, and hands links across. It needs Android 8.0 or later and macOS 13 Ventura or later, and the two devices must be on the same network or in Bluetooth range. The Relay is one subscription through Google Play that covers your phone and your Mac, with a 7-day free trial.

It is not the right tool for a wired copy of a camera roll (OpenMTP), for two-way texting from the Mac (Google Messages for web), or for mirroring the phone's screen. And if you only ever send a few files, Quick Share is free.

Questions people ask

Can a Pixel 9 AirDrop to a Mac?

Yes. Google's help page lists a Pixel 8a or later as able to send to Apple devices, so a Pixel 9 can. Set the Mac's AirDrop to Everyone first.

Can a Mac AirDrop to a Pixel 9?

Google's help page says receiving works on a Pixel 9 and later, except the Pixel 9a. Its device list is less specific about the 9a, so check both pages if you own one.

Do I need Android File Transfer for a Pixel 9?

Google no longer offers or documents that app, and its USB help page does not cover a Mac. OpenMTP is the free replacement.

Why does my Pixel 9 charge but not show on my Mac?

The cable may carry power only, or the phone is still in charging mode. Tap the USB notification and pick File Transfer, and try a different cable.
